Assistant Camp Director at Outdoor Adventure and Mythology Summer Day Camp

Title: Assistant Summer Camp Director

Plato Learning operates all-outdoor mythology-based day camps for kids ages 7-15. We create a world where monsters, myth, and magic transport kids out of the mortal realm into one where they are empowered to develop new skills, take risks, solve problems, and ultimately become Heroes. With seventeen camp programs spanning from NYC to California, Mythik Camps uses actors, live-action role-play, and physically and mentally engaging activities to bring myths to life.

Job Summary:We are hiring an energetic leader to serve as summer Assistant Camp Director at our Brooklyn location. The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for managing a team of Counselors and Leadership Staff as they encourage campers to explore their love of stories and adventure using Plato Learning’s play-based literacy model. They guide the staff experience with their Leadership Team to keep Camp running at its full potential, and set a heroic example for their staff through service-leadership. Assistant Directors also maintain working relationships with heir staff by organizing performance evaluations and provide coaching and guidance where needed.

Job Responsibilities:

Guide the Staff Experience.

  • Schedule and help manage a staff of approximately 30 early-career professionals.
  • Provide on-going feedback and mentorship that supports them as leaders in the camp space.
  • Maintain our standards for self expression and community well-being that define our camp’s environment and culture
  • Uplift our staff and empower them to succeed in the care and mentorship of campers at camp.
  • Lead staff to have resilience through training that allows them to develop the growth of our campers.

Build a Community of Heroes.

  • Help Camp Director organize, launch, and run your local camp program bringing stories to life for campers.
  • Train and coach staff on appropriate parent communications, camper supervision and active engagement
  • Encourage physical, intellectual, and social-emotional growth for our campers, while also adhering to Plato Learning’s policies and procedures.

Lead Your Team.

  • Assist the Camp Director in coordinating responsibilities with the Operations Coordinator to keep Camp materials stocked and ready.
  • Delegate and work together to keep Camp running smoothly, as you help each position to grow and flourish in their specialty.
  • Present and share morning announcements and facilitate daily morning Staff Meetings.
  • Complete mid-season and end-of-season evaluations for Camp Staff. Deliver feedback based on both evaluations to staff members in order to encourage growth and success in their positions

Steel your Resolve.

  • Our Camp is an energetic all-outdoor environment that requires staff and campers to embrace exciting challenges.
  • We are looking for courageous individuals excited by the discomfort of adventure, and who do not shy away from responsibility and physical exertion, even during the heat of summer or a rainfall.
  • A Brooklyn Assistant Camp Director will spend most of their day on their feet and walk anywhere from 15,000-20,000 steps/day on the job, across changes in elevation and varying terrain.

The Hours:

  • 5-10 hours/week of remote training and prep-work from April-May for a total of
  • Facilitate In-Person Training days prior to program start
  • 45-50 hours/week in-person at your camp location for 9 program weeks
  • Camp Schedule: 7:30am-4:30pm; Monday-Friday (Campers present 8:45-4:10)

What are we looking for?

  • Experience working with children K-8 in schools, after school programs or other structured capacities
  • Leadership Experience: setting and maintaining standards for high performance, inspiring others, and delegating responsibilities, preferably with early career employees.
  • Strong conflict resolution, communication, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excitement about working in an outdoor fast-paced environment in the summer
  • Ability to maintain stamina and endurance over the course of the Camp Season
  • Experience working in a Summer Camp setting.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Compensation: $20/hour
  • Pre-Season Work/Training (April-May): 5-10 hours/week at $18 an hour
  • Referral Bonus: $50 bonus for any referred applicants who are hired and work at least 4 weeks.
